Character 4 - Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2nd Edition

Welcome back to day four of our fun and exciting Character Creation Challenge! Today's character is from an old, obscure RPG from the late 1980s, TSR Inc.'s Advanced Dungeons and Dragons 2nd Edition. I'm sure a few of my readers have heard of this obscure little game but for those who haven't, AD&D was published in 1989 as the second edition of the Advanced line of Dungeons and Dragons games. The base game has no setting but several were published (my favorites are Spelljammer, Dark Sun and Planescape... yeah, I like the odd ducks). So since we're only using corebooks today's character will be a generic fantasy setting character. Let's get to it, shall we? Character Creation Step 1 - Generate Ability Scores Characters in AD&D have 6 ability scores: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom and Charisma. They all do what they say on the label. Ability scores determine what classes you can play, to what levels and if you get any bonus ex...

Character 3 - Aberrant

Welcome back, readers. I hope you're enjoying these characters and my commentary. Today's character is White Wolf Games' 1999 superheroes in the near future real world game, Aberrant! Set in the near future of 2008, Aberrant takes place in a world where the research satellite/orbital station Galatea  crashed to earth in 1998, triggering the creation of superheroes known here as Novas. The first Nova was a firefighter named Randel Portman whose abilities allowed him to absorb the energy of a fire engulfing a school bus in New York, saving the lives of the children on board. Since then, plenty of factions have arisen including super teams and corporations dedicated to exploiting Novas and even a wrestling league (the Xtreme Warfare Federation... this is a VERY 90s game) dedicated to super powered brawling. Long time gamers may be aware that Aberrant was a prequel setting to White Wolf's Aeon (renamed Trinity because MTV had more expensive lawyers) and itself had a preque...

Character 2 - 13th Age

Right, so I've played exactly one session of 13th Age several years ago at GenCon, but that was enough to convince me to buy the book. It's a fun fantasy setting from Pelgrane Press that uses a fairly generic OGL d20 resolution mechanic. The biggest difference between this and other OGL systems is the introduction of Icons and One Unique Things. Icons are hugely powerful NPCs that your character has a connection to and One Unique Things are well... things that make your character unique. You want to be the only Dwarf in the world? Sure. You want to have the only little robot buddy in the world? Go nuts! But we're not here to discuss systems, we're here to make characters so let's get to it! So this is a pretty bog standard character creation system until about the halfway point. See if you can pick from the list where it goes off the usual formula if you're familiar with the OGL system! In brief the steps are: Choose your race. Choose your class. Generate your ...

Welcome To My Character Creation Blog!

Hello and welcome to Chigg's Chargen Corner where I, your gracious host, will be going through my vast RPG collection and attempting to make a character for (at least) every day of January, 2022. Inspired by Nook's challenge over on Twitter. I'll probably break format REALLY quickly, but for now I'm just going to go in the order I have the books on my shelves and I will be sticking with corebooks in most cases.  So let's begin with the first corebook on the shelf: 2016's 7th Sea RPG. For those who aren't familiar, this is the second edition of the classic fantasy pirate themed game set, in the corebook at least, among the warring Nations of Thea. Every character is a hero from one of these nations and their cultures tell you what it means to be a hero from that nation.  The nations of Thea aren't EXACTLY thinly veiled fantasy versions of real world nations...sometimes they don't even bother with the veil. Anyway, the options are: Avalon - Fantasy Bri...
